"Advocacy Amidst The Rapids"
Rivers and waterways have long been lifegiving resources for Native Peoples. Traditionally, rivers and waterways have quenched our thirst, provided life and abundance, created modes of transportation, and opened pathways of communication. Sometimes referred to as the “veins of our Mother the Earth” we recognize our many waters as givers of life. We also recognize the waterways which may at times become unstable. Navigating turbulent waterways is also grounded in Indigenous traditions. These once calm waters become environments which test our abilities, and during moments of uncertainty, force us to quickly adapt. It is in these environments that we must work together, and across our differences, we must continue to build lasting partnerships to advocate for our own survival, and to work for the benefit of our children. Amidst these politically turbulent times, we learn and grow; and continue to assert our rights while those same rights are being challenged in the courts which impact Indigenous education. Let this year’s Spring Gathering bring us together as we paddle down the river of life once again, amidst the rapids.
